With all the wonderful international cuisines now available in DublinTown, it is sometimes easy to forget about the many traditional Irish restaurants we have available on our doorstep. From hearty stews to old-fashioned greasy fry ups, we took a look at some of the best places to get traditional Irish food in DublinTown.
The Hairy Lemon
The Hairy Lemon is a bustling pub located on Stephen Street that serves up some of the best traditional Irish food in town. Their specialities include their beef and Guinness pie, Dublin coddle or their traditional bacon and cabbage!
The Winding Stair
Doubling as a bookshop and restaurant, The Winding Stair serves up excellent homemade grub in a relaxed atmosphere. Overlooking the River Liffey, the restaurant sources its food from local suppliers and offers a range of old Irish favourites.
The Bakehouse
With a mission statement of reminding Dublin of the traditional foods and breads its parents and grandparents were raised on, the Bakehouse are masters of great old fashioned Irish baked goods and foods. Everything from their beef stew to their Gurr cake is freshly and lovingly prepared in house every day.
Flanagans
A family-run business since 1980, there’s a warm welcome, excellent hospitality and great food at exceptional prices. If it’s a traditional Irish classics like an Irish Stew, this is it! Flanagans is a firm lunch and dinner favourite with Dubliners and visitors alike.
O’Neills
Nestled on the corner of Suffolk Street, O’Neills Pub and Kitchen is well-known for its wide selection of Irish dishes and its award-winning carvery which is considered one of the best in the city. Its famed ‘Really Good’ Full Irish Breakfast is available all day for any late risers who has enjoyed the St Patrick’s Day festivities a little too much!
The Woollen Mills
A sister restaurant of the Winding Stair, The Woollen Mills offers a quintessentially Irish experience serving up produce sourced from local Irish artisans, The restaurant is steeped in local history – James Joyce once worked in the building – and offers up Irish classics such as coddle and Irish ham with chips.
Madigan’s North Earl Street
One the renowned watering hole of literary giants such as James Joyce, Brendan Behan and Patrick Kavanagh, Madigan’s North Earl Street offers both traditional Irish food with amenu including dishes such as bacon & cabbage and Irish stew. The Boar’s Head is an old-style Dublin pub located on Capel Street. The restuarnt offers an authentic vibe Celtic feel and serves up proper Irish food. Their Irish stew is well-known throughout the city.
