Street of the Week: Middle and Upper Abbey Street
- Mon, 30 Jul 2018
Abbey Street derives its name from the historic Cistercian Abbey of St. Mary that once stretched through the north of the city and was known back in the 18th Century as Great Abbey Street.
It ended at what was then known as Drogheda Street, which today is now O’Connell Street. Upper and Middle Abbey Street are the oldest sections of Abbey Street as much of Lower Abbey Street was laid out and constructed in the 19th Century.
For food and drinks on Middle Abbey Street you have The Oval Pub, Govinda’s, The Gin Palace, Banyi, Bóbó’s and Wigwam, which is the perfect social spot for food, drinks, live music and even a bit of ping-pong! Here you’ll also find the excellent Vice Coffee.
You can book your getaway with one of the following travel agents: Abbey Travel, Pab Travel, Tour America and Cruise Holidays; while more businesses on Middle Abbey Street include The Academy, Snake Bite Tattoo, Hidden Hearing, Terrisales, House of Colour and Celebrations. This is the place to go for all your party needs – balloons, bunting, partyware, whatever you need to deck out your party the team here can help.
Tasty Threads is a fashion exchange store where you can buy, sell or trade your designer and pre-loved gems for men and women. Here you’ll also find aromatic, delicious coffee and tea from Neighbourhood Coffee, who serve up freshly made breakfast and lunch from pastries to pasta dishes. When on the hunt to give your much-loved garments some TLC, look to New York Cleaners who offer a top quality to dry clean and laundry service.
Upper Abbey Street has a unique collection of businesses that include Il Caffe di Luca, TaKaRa, Doppio Zero Caffee and T.P. Smiths, as well as the National Leprechaun Museum, the Oriental Emporium, and GSM Solutions – where, if you need a phone or laptop fixed, then GSM is the place to visit. They are experts in electronics repairs, plus they even have a mini museum of old phones!
