This week’s Street of the Week is…. Capel Street!

But when was the last time you visited a street out of the norm? Each week, DublinTown is going to focus on one of the streets in the city, giving you a little history and showing you some of the great businesses in the area that make it worth visiting. And for this week we bring you Capel St

A little history…
Capel Street was constructed in the Seventeenth century. Sir Humphrey Jervis, developer of the Jervis Estate, approached Viceroy Lord Essex looking for finance for a bridge. In exchange, he promised to call the bridge Essex and to name the street behind it after the family of name ‘Capel’.
In the late Eighteenth Century the lower section of the street was a thriving centre for trades and artisan activity. But it wasn’t until the Nineteenth century that it took on its current form with the arrival of numerous retail outlets including fine tailors, furniture, antique and hardware stores .
Nowadays, Capel Street offers a unique blend of vibrant new cafes, bars and restaurants.
